Leon Trotsky as Snowball
Leon Trotsky was a Russian politician and revolutionist, and a solid pursuer of Marxism (Animalism as portrayed by George Orwell). He was famous for the founding of the Red Army and defeating the White Army along with Vladimir Lenin, whom I wont go into detail but is portrayed as Old Major in Animal Farm, igniting the will of other politicians and eventually led to the establishment of the first socialist nation.
Leon Trotsky is portrayed as Snowball in the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, maintaining an unseen rivalry between Joseph Stalin, which is potrayed as Napoleon. Their places in the novel are represented as “pigs, who were generallly recognised as being the cleverest of animals. Preminent among the pigs were two young boars named Snowball and Napoleon.”(Orwell, 1945. page.9) Note that Orwell actually described Snowball and Napoleon as “boars” which is more fierce in terms of appearance and build, and has a effect to bring out the potential leadership of these two animals even amongst the other clever pigs. In relationship with the Russian revolution, the author’s is trying to show both Trotsky and Stalin has qualities as leaders and the struggle of power between them after the big boar Vladimir Lenin passed away. Snowball is considered more of a talented speaker than Napoleon, in which he is capable of influencing other mentally less developed by presenting them with genuine ideas and thoughts. Snowball puts propaganda to use in order to achieve the ideals of Animalism (Marxist-Communism). One of his used propaganda style is Card stacking, which glorifies the benefits of the revolution but on the other hand avoiding to explain the animal’s potential concerns, emphasising on peace and equality but ignoring the hard work all the animals will have to endure. However, this is for good measure as it increases the productivity of the farm in which everybody is supposed to own, and he had followed Marx's communist ideals to make sure the people will work, but not in a way of favoring the church (Mr.Jones) as Marxism believed "the lies about Heaven they thought would only lead the animals away from the equality of socialism." (Brownell, Sonia 1995)
He was chased away and later assassinated by Stalin's secret police, which were assembled by himself without the knowledge of others. The dogs that Napoleon raised as puppies serves the exact same purpose of eliminating Snowball, and claiming all the power that Trotsky has used to try and give the nation a quality communist government.
